ABOUT: Step back in time; before cell phones, the internet, books on tape, moving vehicles.

Imagine life in Germany in 1770. America was still under

British rule. Beethoven is born in Bonn.

Ludwig van Beethoven personifies the idea of the creative genius of popular imagination, railing against convention and physical limitations to challenge the boundaries of form and expression in his art. Recognized as one of the greatest and most influential composers of the Western classical tradition, he defied the onset of deafness from the age of 28 to produce an output that encompasses 722 works, including 9 symphonies, 35 piano sonatas and 16 string quartets.

Beethoven composed all popular genres of his time; songs, sonatas, ballets, concerts, string quartets, symphonies, piano trios, overtures, and one opera. Beethoven composed only one opera, Fidelio, which took years to get right. He re-wrote one aria no fewer than 18 times and came up with four different overtures before deciding upon the one he liked. He died in Vienna on the March 26, 1827 after a long illness that has variously been attributed to alcohol, hepatitis, cirrhosis and pneumonia. A strange fact, he died during a thunderstorm. He did suffer from depression and isolation.

Missing Germany and Austria just a bit. I, Paz, am quite the fan of classical music. The ability of a composer and musician to make the violin or cello "dance" is a true testament of musical talent that I do not possess. A highlight of my recent holiday was an evening when Alex and I enjoyed an excellent classical performance in Vienna in the Grand Hall.

A True Antique.

French Bronze Bust of Beethoven, marked.
