Italian Baroque Cartapesta Angel, Cartapesta/Papier Mache Arch Angel, 17Th C Parcel Guild & Polychrome Paint

Italian Baroque Cartapesta Archangel, 17th Century

A remarkable 17th-century Italian Baroque cartapesta Archangel, crafted from papier-mâché and beautifully finished with parcel gilt and polychrome paint.

Cartapesta, or papier-mâché, was an important traditional Italian medium used to create devotional and decorative sculpture. Its ability to produce highly expressive forms while remaining relatively lightweight made it especially well suited to religious figures and theatrical Baroque compositions.

This magnificent Archangel has an extraordinary sense of movement and presence. The combination of richly painted details and areas of parcel gilding gives the figure a wonderfully aged, luminous quality, while the hand-crafted character makes it clear that this is a truly unique antique work of art.

A spectacular statement piece for a collector of Italian Baroque art, religious sculpture, or European decorative arts. Equally compelling displayed in a library, entryway, living room, or as part of a sophisticated collection of antique sculpture.
